A profession is one facet of a person.

My professional life revolves around IT and providing technical leadership services for large-scale strategic transformation programmes to clients in the defence, security and financial sectors (see the "Work Stuff" section below if you are interested). Having inherited the desire to make a positive contribution in my professional life from my parents (a detective and a nurse), I actively seek complex and ambitious projects that contribute to a safer, more secure and more just society in someway.

I'm always happy to chat and offer my perspective without any contractual commitment so if you have a challenge of that nature which you feel I may be able to help with then feel free to get in touch (perhaps take a quick look at the blog for some insight into my thinking).

My true passion in life is martial arts; aside from the obvious practical benefits, training offers an opportunity for self-expression and a path to progress that is entirely in your own hands. I have now trained for roughly 19 years in Wing Chun kung fu and Brazilian Jui Jitsu with Kevin Chan at Kamon Martial Arts and gone on to supplement this base with a few years of Boxing and some Taekwondo, just to satisfy my own curiosity.

Being something of a pragmatist and having only started my journey in martial arts upon leaving university I decided that a career as a professional was somewhat (read incredibly) unlikely, and so stuck to the original plan of applying my degree in software engineering to make ends meet. Whilst not necessarily as glamorous, this line of work does allow me to satisfy my creative impulses and drive to make things* somewhat more successfully than the culinary experiments that take up most of the remainder of my spare time.

It is probably worth mentioning that whilst I have been SC or DV cleared for most of my career, I do not currently hold an active clearance.

*Characteristics I put down to the absence of a television and an abundance of Lego during a large part of my childhood!

I recently came across an article suggesting that the compliance functions of financial institutions are to become the subject of significant job cuts over the coming months, and whilst it comes as no surprise that firms seeking to increase profitability look to reduce spending in areas that do...

When financial institutions talk about "compliance" what they are referring to is compliance with the laws and regulations of the countries that they operate in, "compliance risk" refers to the risk of the institution or its staff breaching those regulations and "controls" are the people,...

My previous posts have described the compliance risk control mechanisms in operation by the financial services sector as fundamentally flawed and suggested that the industry would benefit by adopting an entity-centric model more analogous to the one employed by security and law enforcement...
